(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 21)—Sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) netted four goals in leading the McKendree College hockey team to an 8-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Illinois State University.
Roberts scored two goals each in the second and third periods to help the Bearcats pull away for its second win in as many days against the Icebirds. McKendree is now 17-14-1 overall and will return to the ice Friday night at home against Northwestern University. Face-off is set for 8:30 p.m. at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights.
Freshman center Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) scored twice in the first six minutes of play to get McKendree off and running. Junior defenseman David Padgett (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) scored later in the period to extend the Bearcats’ lead to 3-0. Illinois State cut the margin to 3-1 early in the second period before Roberts started his scoring frenzy. He collected an even-strength goal at the 18:16 mark before adding a power-play goal just 53 seconds later.
Roberts got his hat trick with just under three minutes remaining in the contest before adding his fourth goal just 34 seconds later. Both third-period goals for Roberts came on the power play.
Sophomore center Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill./Highland) scored McKendree’s other goal in the contest. Freshman center Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) posted three assists while Dreyer added two more.
Junior Marcus Power (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill./O’Fallon) made 35 saves to pick up the win between the pipes for the Bearcats.
